Vale Geoff Mackey

It is with deep regret that the club advise of the sad passing of Geoff Mackey, club groundsman, last Friday week.

Geoff filled the position of club groundsman at Sylvania Waters Athletic Track on two separate occasions. Initially when Jack Sanderson retired and then Geoff handed over to Ray Green whom upon his retirement handed over back to Geoff in 2018.

It was following the passing of his beloved wife Dot in 2018 that Geoff returned to his former position as club groundsman. Dot had worked in the club canteen for many years and Geoff believed being back at the track was a good diversion for him.

The ladies in the canteen who had been friends with Dot could indeed empathise with him. They too had loved and also missed Dot. Geoff’s friends at the track understood his sadness and were there for him. Likewise they could count on him. If the ladies in the canteen asked him for assistance to do anything he did it in a very helpful way.

Geoff was always early to the track, had everything ready usually before the school arrived, he ran a tight ship, everything in its place and was very reliable.

Geoff’s passing will be felt by so many but none more so than his family, his boys Craig, Scott and Andrew and their partners and their children. He was dearly loved by them all and will be greatly missed. The club extends our sincere condolences.

Now reunited with Dot. Fly free Geoff.

Geoff’s Funeral is to be held at St Lukes Anglican Church 526-536 The Kingsway Miranda on Thursday 17th March at 1.30pm.
