The Greatest race of his career!!
Ollie Hoare, is now a Commonwealth Games Gold Medallist after having the race of his life to record a sensational victory in the 1500m final yesterday against top quality competition!
Hoare stormed home down the final straight only taking the lead in the final metre to run a new Personal Best and Commonwealth Games Record time of 3:30.12 – 2 seconds faster than his previous PB!!
Coming into the final straight in 4th position, he was able to overtake Kenyan, Abel Kipsang (4th 3;30.82), 2022 World Champion Jake Wightman from Scotland (3rd 3:30.53) and 2019 World Champion Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya (2nd 3:30.21) before cruising home for a famous victory.
He was also the first Australian since Herb Elliot in 1958 to win gold over the mile event at the Commonwealth Games (the equivalent event then to today’s 1500m)!
Hoare described his victory after the race,
“The last lap I just wanted to stay relaxed, and I knew that my time would come. It’s hard to believe when you have guys there that are absolute class. But I was able to get out and I just had the kicker at the end, and it was spectacular.”
He also dedicated the race to his grandfather, Sutherland Athletics life member Fred Hoare who sadly passed away last week.
An extraordinary achievement by Ollie who has developed immensely from being a club runner at Sutherland in his youth to now being a Commonwealth Champion! Congratulations!!!
